Banana split protein shake, Cashew protein bites, and Chocolate protein cake for one
This post is sponsored by DailyBurn. Update: Fuel-6 is no longer available, but you can still make these protein snacks using your favorite protein powder.
Oh friends, I have THREE new protein-packed recipes to share with ya.
These are some of the new pre- and post-workout goods I’ve been using lately. DailyBurn offered to send me some of their supplements to check out, and I was excited to give the pre-workout and protein powder a whirl. The Pre tastes like a tropical punch -and dissolves easily, so no powdery pockets exploding in your face- and also includes a dose of caffeine + beta-alanine, branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), and creatine to enhance performance.. I was interested to learn that many companies who source BCAAs do so from freaky sources (like… bird feathers… gagggg), and DailyBurn uses BCAAs naturally-derived from botanical sources. I don’t use the PRE very often -it gives me a TON of energy- but it’s perfect for the mornings when I have to teach and am moving a little slowly.
As far as the Fuel-6 goes, I consider myself a bit of a protein powder connoisseur. I’ve tried a shelve’s worth of plant-based protein options, and always enjoy comparing them. I grabbed a pack and whisked it into some water. Next, I examined its appearance, gave the glass a gentle swirl as I stuck my nose into the glass for a full sniff (ok, just kidding) and took a sip.
It tastes like CAKE BATTER. It’s sweet, but not overwhelmingly so, and has an awesome flavor; it’s also lacking that “woodsy” taste I’ve gotten from some vegan protein powders in the past.
The ingredients are fantastic, too.
I used the Fuel-6 in three protein-packed recipes, and am excited to share them with you! These all make delicious snacks, and are all packed with protein, fiber, and healthy fats. Please let me know if you give them a try!
This smoothie is one of our favorite combinations. It tastes like a healthy banana split, with dark cherries, crunchy cacao nibs and banana. Sometimes I’ll add a handful of spinach for a greens boost.
Banana split protein shake
(Makes 1-2 servings)
1 banana
1 cup frozen cherries
1 cup almond milk
1 pack Fuel-6 chocolate
2 tablespoons cacao nibs
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
Pinch of sea salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1. Blend all ingredients in a high-speed blender until smooth. Serve immediately, and enjoy!
Cashew protein bites
Makes 10
1 pack of Fuel-6 vanilla
1/4 cup dried fruit (I used cherries)
1/4 cup raw cashews
1/4 cup hemp seeds
3 tablespoons almond butter
1/4 cup maple syrup
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
Pinch of sea salt
1. Process all ingredients in a mini food processor until well combined, and a dough forms.
2. Use a melon ball scooper (or your hands) to shape into spheres. Store covered in the fridge.
These little bites are perfect for make-ahead snack options. I’ll put a couple in a bag in my purse; they travel well, taste fantastic and are very satisfying.
This last one is like a tasty dessert treat. It’s a microwave cake for one, and the nutrition stats are pretty incredible. If you looked at the nutrition stats alone, you’d never guess that it was from a cake. 😉
Chocolate protein cake for one
Makes 1 large serving
1 pack Fuel-6 chocolate
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
1 tablespoon (or a little more..) chocolate chips (don’t skip these!)
1/8 cup water
1 egg
2 tablespoons applesauce
1. Spray a glass bowl with nonstick spray or olive oil.
2. Use a fork to whisk all ingredients in the bowl until you have a smooth batter.
3. Place in the microwave and cook for 2 minutes until set. Serve with almond butter if you like, and a drizzle of maple syrup.
Nutritional info for all of the snacks above can be found here! 🙂
Do you regularly use protein powder? Any favorite recipes or smoothie combos??
Hope you have a wonderful afternoon!
Don’t forget to check in with your workout here, too.
xoxo

I definitely need to make some of these protein snacks! I feel like these days I am always on the run and never have time to sit down to a meal until dinner!
I’ve been looking for a yummy protein powder that my husband won’t reject. 😉
Would this be one you would repurchase on your own based on taste/texture or do you have a better recommendation?
Love your reviews, and always excited to see a new post from you! Have a great day!
yes, definitely. i actually had to replenish my stash before writing this post because i ate it all haha
xoxo
I had no idea that daily burn sold supplements!
I don’t know what looks more delicious! I’ll be starting with the pancakes first!
Drinking protein shakes is not for me but eating them is! Totally making a protein cake for one!YUM!

You had me at the title of this post! Love all those things!! PS granola from the book is fab 😉
yay, so happy you like it!
If you’re ever looking for an all natural BCAA, MRM makes a great one in watermelon and it’s sweetened with stevia.
Those balls and the cake for one look amaze balls!!!
I do love protein powder, but try to stay mindful and get most of my protein from real, whole foods. I don’t stress though. Powder is helpful, esp. on teaching and higher activity days. You got me hooked on the SunWarrior, but I also like Plant Fusion Vanilla or Vega in a pinch.
that sounds delicious!!
YES, “woodsy” is exactly what describes the funky taste in some plant-based proteins! I’ve never been able to figure out how to describe it. Used to use Skoop, then realized I was poor so now I’m using pea protein I got for $10 (!!!) at the discount grocery store. Good stats, good flavor, and good price for a poor postgrad. 😉
PS: Took hot yoga yesterday and totally thought of you! It was an interesting reunion with studio practice…and sweaty. So sweaty. (Blogged the play by play – I’m sure you can relate to the “realness” haha)
your post was everything. your blog just makes me so happy in general 🙂
Anything banana attracts me, so I was pleasantly surprised with this recipe on my reader today. Thanks Gina!
You caught my attention the second you said CAKE BATTER. Yes, please.
I’ve been really wanting to try the Pre, just been hesitant to pull the trigger on buying a whole pack in case I don’t like it. I wish they did tiny sample packs or something that way you could try it out before buying a whole box!
i still have some in my pack if you want me to meet you or give you some to try!
That would be awesome (as long as it’s not too big of an inconvenience)! We can meet up somewhere around OB or wherever else is convenient for you!
k let me know when you’re free!
Are you free on Wednesday by any chance? Maybe sometime in the morning or early afternoon?
yep! morning works for me 🙂 want to email me fitnessista at gmail and we can figure it out
I’ve been looking for new protein powder, so this post was great! I’ve tried so many, but am always turned off by the ingredient list! I’ll be giving this one a try next:)
Gina, are you still using the Shakeology Protein Powder at all?? The chocolate tastes so good, but I’m not sure it’s worth the cost!
i was up until a few months ago- tom still drinks it every day. i think it’s worth the cost if you’re going to drink it by itself with water, and if you want the herbs/superfoods. if i’m going to make a smoothie or something with it, i’ll use the fuel 6 because it also tastes awesome but is less expensive
ohmygosh i am so going to use that uh… micrwave protein cake recipe!!! (mug cake? pancake? haha something!) it looks SO good!
btw, can you post the ingredients for the Pre? i couldnt find it online!
Also, I’m loving vega! i love that i get greens + protein. and i try no to reply on PP so much anymore! I did buy hemp PP because it was on a wicked sale and Ive only seen it really pricey 🙂
yes, i will snap a pic!
I am not much of a protein powder user. If anything, I opt for hemp powder. Yesterday I made a fabulous tahini salad dressing that I stirred some hemp powder into, best decision!
I can’t decide which of these recipes I want to try out first! 🙂 They all look fantastic which comes as no surprise!
Protein Powder is a staple in my life and I have a bit of an obsession…if I get any more canisters I am pretty sure my husband will flip!
I don’t use protein powder as much as I used to, but I’ve actually been thinking about getting back to it. That is so freaky that companies source BCAA’s from bird feathers. I’m grossed out about that, but also slightly concerned because I’m actually allergic to feathers. I wonder that means for me. It’s probably not good lol.
yes, super creepy!
I regularly use protein powder and have done only a little experimenting with different plant-based brands. I try to stay away from soy and I have Celiac, so a must is soy free and gluten free. Right now I’m using Perfect Fit Vanilla–it’s not my favorite and definitely has that “woodsy” taste (thank you for giving me an adjective to probably describe it!) I would love to hear your Top 5!
That protein cake looks so good! I just perfected a microwave chocolate chip cookie, but this is obviously much healthier and you get more from it. Thanks for sharing!
That chocolate protein cake is going to make an appearance in my kitchen tonight!
These look awesome! I’m using up my Vega Chocolate sports protein powder (which isn’t my favorite because the stevia taste is prominent, at least to me). I really love Sun Warrior though!
All 3 recipes sound great! I need to make a batch of those bites to take on our trip tomorrow.
I’ve been LOVING Vega’s new Coconut Almond and Mocha flavors but I’m interested to try Fuel 6. I noticed it has artichoke protein…very interesting! You always give a good honest review. Thanks for that!
Banana split protein shake is one of my all time faves! I am going to miss shakes as we are in ‘pack out’ status.
